Dating is a very confusing game and it’s extremely hard to figure out the dos and don’ts. Should you dress formally or casually? Should you mention sex? Thankfully we tracked down some lovely ladies who gave us some pointers about the things that guys should DEFINITELY not do on the first date. Here are 10 of them:
Turn up late
No woman ever likes to be kept waiting; in fact, it should always be the other way around. So if it’s the first time you’re meeting her, make sure you’re on time.
PS We know it’s a bit unfair but it’s perfectly acceptable for a girl to arrive 15-20 minutes on a date.
Talk about himself all the time
Nothing quite turns off a woman than a narcissist who can’t stop talking about himself. Poornima Subramaniam, a 30-year-old executive told us: ‘I met this guy who was just obsessed with himself. He was something of a gym rat and just couldn’t stop talking about his abs. At one point, he actually got up and asked me touch it, that too in a public restaurant! He even said I needed to work out my triceps more. Needless to say there was no second date.’
Be a slob
If there’s one thing a lady hates, it’s a guy who isn’t dressed properly, unhygienic or reeks. If you’re meeting a girl for the first time, make sure you’re dressed for the occasion, bathed and dressed properly. If you’ve long hair wash it properly and make sure there’s no oil dripping down. And if you’ve a beard make sure it’s neatly trimmed. First impressions last for a long time and if you appear like a slob in the first date, that image is going to stick for life.
Agree with everything she says
No one likes a kiss-ass, so while it might be okay to politely agree with some things she says, you shouldn’t nod your head to everything she says. So if she says that football’s a stupid sport or vodka is better than scotch, please feel free to correct her and let her know that is stupid opinion.
Talk about his sexual exploits
Every guy likes to think he’s Barney Stinson, James Bond or Don Draper but it’s a very, very bad idea to discuss previous conquests with the girl you’re meeting for the first time. Kate Shaw, a 25-year-old journalist told us: ‘I once dated this guy who was a bit too inspired by Barney Stinson. He wouldn’t stop talking about all the girls he had slept with, how good he was in bed and how he could convince any girl to sleep with him. He would also keep on bragging about how he could convince any girl to get in bed with him. It sounded more like he was convincing himself more than me. Needless to say, things didn’t work out.’
Point out your date’s flaws
While paying too many compliments might be a bad thing, pointing out flaws might work badly as well. If you’re on a first date, your job is to make her feel good about herself, not the other way around. She might not hold the fork properly, keep her elbows on the table or mix ginger ale with whisky but you really can’t criticize her on the first date.
Crib about things
Another big turn off is the criticizer. These are individuals who hate everything about life and that often results in extremely irritating conversations. Radika Madhu, a 22-year-old advertisement executive describes a guy who she once met: ‘So I meet this guy for the first time and he cribs about everything in the world religion, Arvind Kejriwal, his job, his boss, his dad, his mum, his dog and humanity in general. By the end of it I felt like throwing a drink in his face.’
Talk about his ex
If you’ve just gotten out of a long relationship, it might be a good idea to wait a while before you start dating again. This is because no one wants to be subjected to an evening of hearing about how amazing a stranger’s ex was. Also, this clearly shows that you’re not over your ex, and no girl wants to be the rebound.
Get sloshed
Alcohol as a social lubricant is excellent to initially lower the guards and get the conversation flowing but there is too much of a good thing. Karen tells us about this other guy she once dated who just couldn’t hold his drinks. ‘He ordered two large whiskies to appear manly but I don’t think he was much of a drinker. After drinking, he got supremely sloshed, misplaced his wallet and even vomited on the floor. I ended up paying the bill and stashing him in a cab. It was the most horrifying night of my life!’
Pay the bill or go Dutch
There’s some contention about this and women’s lib supporters and feminists might argue that it’s not right for the guy to pay for the bill but most women, still like it when the guy pays for the bill. So if it’s the first time you’re meeting someone, insist on paying the bill and firmly refuse their offer to split it.
