A lot of people think it’s gross, weird, or even unsanitary to sleep next to a fur buddy. But here’s some good news for those who love sleeping next to their pup: There are some proven scientific benefits to doing so!

While tons of people already admit to sleeping with their dog — about half of dog owners — it’s not unlikely that even more have taken up the habit as of late. Animals can provide comfort and a sense of security, which many people are finding they need now more than ever.

Veterinarian Michelle Martinez told Inside Edition that she has a hard time finding someone who doesn’t sleep with their dog, herself included. She says she allows her dog, Dexter, to come into bed with her, and it’s not a bad habit to have.

“Oxytocin is a good enzyme hormone that comes out when people are cuddling their dogs and it causes a sense of relaxation and calmness,” she says. It also can help stave off feelings of depression and loneliness, and it can even combat insomnia.

While you may be worried about getting your sheets covered in dog hair, the arguments Michelle makes are pretty compelling! If you aren’t already allowing your pooch to hang out in your bed, it might be time to start giving those sheets an extra wash or two a week and get cuddly!
