Meet Scarlett, a heroic cat who she risked her life for her kittens. Scarlett was a feral cat when she gave birth to her kittens in an abandoned garage in Brooklyn, New York. On March 30, 1996, a dangerous fire broke out and Scarlett and her kittens were trapped inside.

That’s when Scarlett’s maternal instincts went into overdrive! While firefighters were extinguishing the blaze, they saw Scarlett carrying her kittens one by one out of the blazing garage and to safety. Scarlett had been severely burned in the process of pulling her kittens from the fire. Her eyes were blistered shut, her ears and paws burned, and her coat highly singed.

Despite her terrible condition, she was seen touching each of her kittens with her nose to ensure they were all there and alive, as the blisters on her eyes kept her from being able to see them. After assuring herself they were all safe and accounted for, she collapsed unconscious.

The cat family was rushed to an emergency animal clinic and from there North Shore Animal League rescued her and her kittens and found them all loving homes.

Scarlett passed away in 2008 but her heroic deed lives on. The North Shore Animal League created an award named after her called the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism.

More importantly, the heroic mother found a loving home and was treated like a queen for the remainder of her days, and rightfully so!

Share Scarlett’s heroism with your family and friends!
