An Alabama man is under investigation after a Facebook video revealed him asking a 10-year-old girl to take her shirt off.
A 37-year-old Hoover man is under investigation after a video showed him asking a 10-year-old girl to take off her shirt, according to police.
The video first surfaced on Facebook over the weekend and has since been shared hundreds of times in recent days.
Birmingham police Sgt. Rod Mauldin, who called the viral video “disturbing,” said a report was filed Monday after detectives were made aware of the video and encouraged the family to file an official report.
In the video, the girl is shown in a dark room on Facetime with the man, who had a previously relationship the girl’s mother.
The man tells the girl to turn on the light, and several times told her to take off her shirt. A second video showed them at a gathering in which it appeared the suspect was rubbing the girl’s leg through her jeans.
Mauldin said it was initially unclear when and where the incident happened, but Mauldin said it was determined that the events happened in both Birmingham and Bessemer. A joint investigation between both cities was launched.
On Feb. 9, the suspect was taken into custody on a probation violation charge. According to court documents, he pleaded guilty in 2016 to two counts of robbery but has failed to pay restitution and court costs which was mandated in his probation.
“This is a developing investigation; additional charges are expected to follow as the investigation progress,’’ Mauldin said. The suspect has not been publicly identified because no formal charges have yet been filed against him.
“The Birmingham Police Department would like to thank the community for their efforts and coming forth with information and videos to shine a light on this type of criminal behavior,’’ Mauldin said.
